Radical History

The Radical Ropers were Baltimore County’s first and only Jump Rope for Heart Demonstration Team, sponsored by the American Heart Association. The team traveled throughout the state of Maryland from 1998 to 2015 promoting the Jump Rope for Heart program and fighting against heart disease, through a highly skilled, choreographed jump rope show. Each jumper on the team attended Dumbarton Middle School located in Towson, Maryland.

Daniel G. Overtoom, was the team founder and head coach for the 17-year reign of Radical Ropers. In addition to leading the team, Mr. Overtoom was head of Dumbarton Middle School’s Physical Education Program. Throughout the year, the Radical Ropers’ ‘Alumni’ Network has grown to over 500 jumpers.

Roper Alumni are staples of the Summer Camps each year, whether they are passing on the skills they have learned over the years, or sneaking in for a quick Towson Hot Bagel lunch with Mr. Overtoom. Keep an eye out because it is most likely that there are some Ropers that have jumped into your day, at some point or another.

The Radical Ropers’ last season performing was 2015. Mr. Overtoom is currently teaching Physical Education at Seven Oaks Elementary School, located in Perry Hall, Maryland. Mr. Overtoom continues to organize the Radical Ropers Summer Camp and 2017 will mark the 15th year of the camp. We hope to see you jumping into our gym this summer!
